ATCO joins Bird-led consortium building 4,500-person lodge for LNG Canada workforce

CALGARY—ATCO Ltd. has joined the construction team responsible for a major new workforce lodge linked to LNG Canada Inc.’s liquefied natural gas project in Kitimat, B.C.

The Cedar Valley Lodge will house about 4,500 of the workers building the new gas liquefaction plant and export terminal on the Pacific Coast.

A consortium led by Bird Construction Inc. was awarded the contract to build the lodge in 2016, but its joint venture partner, Civeo Corp., has since chosen to exit the project. ATCO Structures will step into the JV to take its place.

The revised team is responsible for designing, engineering and building the lodge, which will be one of the largest facilities of its kind ever built in Canada. The temporary lodge will be located near the Kitimat work site and built using modular construction. The original plans pegged the total floorspace at 1.2 million sq. ft., a figure that includes a kitchen and dining area, entertainment areas and worker rooms.

Design engineering work for the new lodge is ongoing, with construction expected to start next spring.
