PCL Construction Great Nothern Concrete Toboggan Race

GNCTR is an adaption of the American Concrete Canoe Race.

For the fifth consecutive year, PCL Construction was the title sponsor of the 44th Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) in support of young engineers.

Hosted by the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ont., the race took place from Jan. 24 to 28.

“PCL’s participation in this event is a great way to meet, network, and share our co-op and new graduate career opportunities and further our commitment to the engineering profession,” said Nadia Camphor, human resources programs specialist at PCL. “We see GNCTR as an avenue for us to contribute to the career development of future engineers and potential PCL employees.”

The race is the largest student-run engineering competition in Canada, attracting over 450 students from universities and technical institutions to design, construct and race a toboggan with concrete running surfaces.

In addition to acting as the event’s title sponsor, PCL’s Canadian offices sponsored individual teams from the University of Waterloo, University of Ottawa, University of Manitoba, University of Calgary and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.

As part of its involvement, PCL participated in the technical and safety exhibits and the career fair, and provided two technical judges and two safety judges, including Cody Nowell, a construction engineer with PCL Winnipeg.

“The tremendous level of effort and dedication students put into GNCTR is why PCL is so proud to be the title sponsor,” says Nowell. “Through this competition, students have a first-hand opportunity to challenge themselves, while working as part of a team to problem solve and build a project that is innovative, meets prescriptive guidelines, and is safe.”

This year, PCL introduced and presented the inaugural safety award at the competition’s closing ceremonies.
