Union Station revitalization project makes significant progress

A major milestone in Toronto’s Union Station revitalization project has been reached as the last of 48 vertical steel columns that will support the glass atrium over the GO Transit train shed roof was put in place.

The revitalization of the train shed is a key component of Metrolinx’s regional transportation plan to improve how people move in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area’s.

Featuring  a large glass atrium as the centrepiece, the train shed is undergoing its first renovation since being built more than 80 years ago. The atrium will replace the centre 5,000 m² of the 35,000-m² roof. Once complete it will stand 13 metres above track level to allow for sunlight and air circulation throughout the shed.

Construction on the train shed began in January 2010 and is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2016.
