The residents of Nanaimo, B.C. will have a new drinking water reservoir in 2014.

The city is building a 14-million-litre drinking water reservoir that will replace its existing open-air reservoir on Nanaimo Lakes Road.

The $11.2-million reservoir will be able to store treated drinking water for more than 30 per cent of the city's residents.
Construction will also incorporate hydro power generating facilities that sell power back to the grid, and pipelines to transport the water to its new reservoir location on Nanaimo Lakes Road.

Funding for the project came from $7.7 million from Canada's Gas Tax Fund and $3.5 million from the city's water reserves.
Construction of the new reservoir is expected to be complete by late 2014.
