Average weekly earnings up in construction sector

According to a recent Statistics Canada report, average weekly earnings in the construction sector were up 0.8 per cent in August to $1,144.43, when compared to the previous month ($1,135.26 in July 2012). Over the 12-month period, average weekly earnings in the sector were up 4.4 per cent (from $1096.43 in August 2011).

Overall average weekly earnings for non-farm payroll employees in Canada increased by 0.4 per cent in August to $907.19, when compared to the previous month ($903.64 in July 2012). Average weekly earnings for non-farm payroll employees over the 12-month period rose by 3.6 per cent (from $875.62 in August 2011).

Average weekly earnings were up in every province over the 12-month period, with Newfoundland and Labrador experiencing the most significant growth, up 8.1 per cent to $942.31.

Payroll employment in the construction sector increased by 5.3 per cent, to approximately 889,700 (from approximately 845,200), over the 12-month period from August 2011 to August 2012.
