Algonquin construction centre LEEDing Eastern Canada

The Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE) recently obtained LEED Platinum certification from the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), the first building to obtain LEED Platinum status in Eastern Canada.

The $79-million facility built on Algonquin College’s Woodroffe Campus in Ottawa features a variety of green features including: a five-storey bio wall, a green roof, solar panels and a storm water recovery system.

The 190,000-sq.-ft. building is designed to hold 2,500 full-time students and an additional 5,000 part-time students, including 600 new construction trades spaces for construction, design, engineering and skilled trades students.
The building officially opened on Aug. 29, 2011.

The design-build company for the facility was the EllisDon Corporation and the architects for the project were Diamond and Schmitt Architects Inc. and Edward J. Cuhaci and Associates Architect Inc.

Funding was provided through $35 million investments from the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada, $7 million from the Constructing our Future Capital Campaign and $2 million from the City of Ottawa (land donation).
