Infrastructure Ontario (IO) has issued a request for qualifications for the construction of Public Health Ontario’s (PHO) Toronto public health laboratory at MaRS Centre Phase 2, located in the city’s Discovery District.

The facility will be designed as a flexible laboratory space equipped to handle new testing technologies, workload surges, changing laboratory functions and research activities.

The new laboratory is expected to conduct approximately 2.8 million tests annually and will replace an existing facility in the west end of Toronto.

The project is expected to achieve LEED Silver for Commercial Interiors certification.

Dr. Vivek Goel, president and CEO of PHO, said the new centre will allow his organization to remain at the forefront of infectious disease testing, detection and control, while its location at MaRS will improve PHO’s links to its scientists, as well as academic, healthcare and private sector partners.

The new lab is expected to open in 2014.

The request for qualifications is available at www.merx.com.

The request for proposals for pre-qualified teams is expected t be released later this year.
