Glassdoor’s 25 Best Places to Work in 2017 in Canada list features winning employers across diverse industries spanning technology, finance, travel and tourism, construction, retail, and more. This is Shopify’s first appearance on the Canada list, which debuted last year. Eleven other employers are also on this list for the first time (12 newcomers total), including Cisco Systems (No. 5, 4.2 rating), Fairmont Hotels and Resorts (No. 7, 4.2 rating), PCL Construction (No. 8, 4.2 rating), Sephora (No. 9, 4.2 rating) and SAP (No. 10, 4.2 rating). Thirteen employers from last year’s list appeared again this year, including Earl’s Kitchen + Bar (No. 21, 4.1 rating; was No. 1 in 2016 with a 4.5 rating), Ceridian (No. 2, 4.5 rating, was also No. 2 in 2016 with a 4.3 rating), and Apple (No. 6, 4.2 rating; was No. 3 in 2016 with a 4.3 rating).

When employees submit reviews about their company on Glassdoor, they are asked to give their opinion on some of the best reasons to work for their employer (pros), any downsides (cons) and are encouraged to provide advice to management. Employees are also asked to rate how satisfied they are with their employer overall, rate their CEO, as well as rate five key workplace attributes, including giving their opinion on career opportunities, compensation & benefits, culture & values, senior management and work-life balance. In addition, employees are asked whether they would recommend their employer to a friend and whether they believe their employer’s business will perform better, worse or remain the same in the next six months.

Employees’ Choice Award winners for the 2017 Best Places to Work are determined using Glassdoor’s proprietary algorithm, taking into account the quantity, quality and consistency of Glassdoor-approved company reviews shared by Canada-based employees between November 2, 2015 and October 30, 2016. At a minimum, employers considered for the list must have received at least 25 company reviews during the eligibility period. For reporting simplicity, ratings are displayed to the nearest tenth, though calculations extend beyond the thousandth to determine final rank.
