EllisDon, award, On Wednesday, October 26th, 2017, the Joseph and Rosalie Segal Family Health Centre (JRSFHC) was selected as a Silver Award recipient in the – over $45 million – project category, by the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) awards program.

“The Joseph & Rosalie Segal Family Health Centre was an extremely challenging project, which could not have been delivered without the great team of Subcontractors, Consultants, and EllisDon’s project team,” said Michael Pereira, Project Manager, EllisDon. “The VRCA Silver Award is a testament to the team’s dedication, hard work, and vision that helped us successfully deliver the largest purpose-built mental health and substance use facility in British Columbia.

JRSFHC is the largest purpose-built facility of its kind for patients with mental health and substance-use issues in British Columbia, located on the existing site of Vancouver General Hospital. The facility includes a state-of-the art healing environment for patients needing short-term acute care for their mental health challenges, including those suffering from major depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, psychotic and mood disorders, and substance dependence.

The eight-storey, 100-bed JRSFHC consolidates inpatient, outpatient and outreach mental health and addiction services into one building, providing clients with a seamless continuum of care, while meeting LEED Gold Certification.

“This project was a challenge — technically, logistically, and clinically. We designed and constructed the facility on an existing site with three critical adjacencies, including operating rooms, research labs and a spinal cord centre,” said Craig Enns, Sr. Project Manager, EllisDon.

Due to the complex nature of the project, the VRCA recognized the team’s ability to successfully overcome these challenges through a collaborative approach. The project was delivered on time with minimal interruption to the surrounding hospital’s day-to-day operations.

The VRCA recognizes the finest companies, projects and individuals in the construction industry across 15 categories.
