A total of 12 awards were presented by the Consulting Engineers of Ontario during a ceremony on April 12 at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto. Award winners were selected from a field of 36 nominees for projects that have enhanced the economic, social and environmental fabric of Ontario, as well as locations across Canada and around the world.

The prestigious Willis Chipman Award went to Ottawa-based consulting engineering firm, REMISZ Consulting Engineers Ltd., for a project it completed for the National Capital Commission at Ottawa’s Rockcliffe Parkway. Instead of building a joint-use pathway by employing traditional retaining walls along a steep escarpment, a system of micro piles, elevated precast concrete slabs, and a new type of guiderail system was implemented for the first time in Ontario. The design reused part of the old heritage wall system and paving stone to create a bluff area for tourists, residents and cyclists.

Five consulting engineering firms won Awards of Excellence, including Integral Group (1-25 employees), Cowater International Inc. (26-50 employees), Associated Engineering Ltd. (51-100 employees), Halsall Associates (100-350 employees) and MMM Group Ltd. (350+ employees).

Six consulting engineering companies won Awards of Merit, including Smith and Anderson Consulting Engineers (Building Engineering and Science), Dillon Consulting Ltd. (Environment), Hatch Mott MacDonald and Hatch (Industry, Energy and Resources), AECOM Ltd. (Project Management), J. L. Richards and Associates and Associated Engineering Ltd. (Studies and Research) and Hatch Mott MacDonald and Amec (Transportation).
