A trailblazer in the Canadian construction industry, Kitchener’s Martha George will be presented with a Queen’s Jubilee Medal tonight during a special ceremony that will also see more than 30 area businesses recognized for excellence.
“Martha is well known in the Canadian construction industry for her tireless efforts and devotion to bringing professionalism, education and innovation to this industry,” notes Grand Valley Construction Association Chair Scott Buck, one of George’s award nominators.
“She has changed the face of ICI construction in the Grand Valley area by introducing invaluable educational opportunities, innovative services and business management courses,” he says. “She has made a national impact through her many contributions as both a board and committee member for numerous construction-related organizations. She is a difference maker.”
George took over leadership of the local construction association seven years ago. She remains active within the sector as a principle in the family-owned masonry firm. George has served as a director on the Canadian Construction Association board and is on the board of the Council of Ontario Construction Associations.
“I was shocked and flattered to learn this high honour was being bestowed upon me,” recalls George. “As a woman taking on a non-traditional role within the Canadian construction sector, it means even more knowing I was nominated by my industry peers.”
George is one of 35 Canadian leaders in construction, and one of six from Ontario, being recognized with a Jubilee medal. She will be formally presented with her medal during a celebration of Grand Valley business excellence on Tues., Feb. 19, 2013 at the Holiday Inn, Fairway Road in Kitchener, Ont. More than 30 companies and individuals will be recognized with a 2013 Business Heritage Award.
