Ceremony held for opening of Charlottetown Airport’s expanded terminal

A grand opening ceremony was held on Jan. 16 for the expanded terminal facility at Charlottetown Airport.

The expansion was designed to accommodate projected traffic growth at the airport while improving its level of service. Features from the expansion and renovations include: improved airline check-in counters; enlarged passenger queuing space; development of the departure lounge and restaurant, and the building of new airline offices and baggage handling facilities.

Construction for the $3.8-million project began on Sept. 11, 2011 and was complete in December 2012. The project was jointly funded by the Government of Canada ($1.2 million through the Gateways and Border Crossings Fund), the Government of Prince Edward Island ($1.15 million) and the Charlottetown Airport Authority.

The event was attended by Canada’s Minister of National Revenue Gail Shea, P.E.I.’s Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Robert Vessey and David McKenna, chairman of the Charlottetown Airport Authority.
